WASTWATER

 

 

A deep lake

dark and grey

and dry weeds

the west wind

can't even

tear away.

      They remain

at anchor

tangled and

losing

hope.

On the slopes

the bracken and

brown rushes

blush

in a fold

of sunlight.

But upstream -

                                                                       silent cold -

no voice, no life

nor even

a ford.

Yet in June

a fluffy host

of little angels,

twiddling their feet

in the water,

break a smile

in the rain

and lunge

to dot

the boggy banks

           with friendly cotton grass.
