Ode to the Baltic Sea
Baltic Sea
bordered with birch
with spruce
and ponds
and swamps
A looking-glass
where scattered clouds
flake off
into sheets
of ice
and when the breeze
freshens
the north wind
bites
the banks of winter.

Between tree-trunks
stands the fog
and on the branches
sweeps
the brush.
From tree to tree
errs a whisper
and each tree-top
is a crack
in an old
varnish.
Hatching
of trunks
against a stumped
distance
From tree to tree
crunch the footsteps,
through black into pearl
grey, through pale grey
into rain-grey
afar off
where it all
fades in.
